Straw is a natural textural additive that gives any surface a distinctive feel. It can be used to create a number of different styles including achieving a comparable match to the classic adobe finish.

Straw is mixed into the clay prior to application. We recommend Straw in all of our plasters except Porcelina™.

  • Each package of Straw is mixed into one bag of plaster.

  • Each bag of Straw contains approximately 1 quart of material.

  • Straw additive is mixed into the second coat of plaster only

When & how to use additives:

For extra texture

Mica- All of our plasters have a natural sparkle from the marble dust aggregate. For extra sparkle Mica flakes are used to add more of a shimmer to the surface of any American Clay finish.

Straw- adding straw gives and old Adobe look and feel, Straw is a textural additive that provides the finished look of American Clay with a different dimension.

During the mixing stage

  • Start by adding 1 gallon of water and about 1/3 of the bag of plaster to a 5 gallon bucket.

  • Mix well with a mixing paddle until you get a slurry.

  • At this point you will add all your desired additives:

    • Up & EZ, pigment, mica, and/or straw.

  • From there you will continue adding plaster and water until the desired consistency is reached.

  • Follow the application steps.

If using straw- it is best to let the plaster mixture with the straw sit overnight before using. OR soak the straw in water for at least 30 minutes prior to mixing.
